How It Begins

Over 20+ years, we’ve watched tens of thousands of students experience the magic of live jazz. Not only are hundreds of schools served, but each year for 25 years, we have supported roughly 25 students in training with jazz greats.

Dozens of students have pursued careers in music. Sparks light fires. We ignite and sustain the flame.

Here’s how we do it:

“Participating in Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra as a teenager every Sunday was life-changing. It was like going to church or temple every week. As a young musician, the opportunity to play regularly and learn new material with a serious group of peers solidified my foundation for becoming a professional.”

Evan Sherman now headlines top clubs — Dizzy’s, Smalls, and others — where he leads a big band. He has played with music icons Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, Roy Hargrove and Lewis Nash.

“The knowledge, experience, and lasting relationships that I made through Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra are immeasurable. I am eternally grateful for everything I learned there — that alone instilled confidence, comfortability, and respect for the music that I plan to spend the rest of my life performing for live audiences.”

Davis Whitfield was appointed Assistant Director of JSYO and went on to attend the renowned Berklee College of Music where he received the Presidential Scholarship, a top honor at Berklee. He has toured the US, France, and Spain, maintains a residency at Mezzrow in the West Village, and performs with various artists as a side man.

Exposing the most curious and talented to one of America’s cultural touchstones

We design youth field trips to showcase live jazz in an authentic club setting
